5. 천상의 소에 관한 서(The Book of the Heavenly Cow)

 

'천상의 소에 관한 서(The Book of the Heavenly Cow)'는 아마르나(Amarna) 시기에 쓰인 고대 이집트 문서로 여겨지는데, 내용 가운데 이간들이 최고의 지존인 태양신에 대항하여 반란을 획책하는 음모를 꾸미는 내용이 포함되어 있다. 문서의 내용은 세티 1세, 람세스 2세, 람세스 3세의 무덤에 기록되어 있다. 가장 이른 시기의 문서는 투탄카문의 장례 사원에서 나타나고 있다. 문구들과 3개의 그림들도 같이 포함되어 있는데, 이중 하늘의 여신 누트가 암소로 나타내진 '천상의 소'를 누트를 창조해낸, 대기의 여신 슈(Shu)와 '태초의 8명의 신' 오그도아드(Ogdoad)가 이를 거들고 있는 내용의 큰 그림이 포함되어있다. 이 문서는 피라미드 서에서 기원된 신화의 구절들로 추정된다. 신왕조 시대에 이르러서는 불완전한 창조와 죽음에 관한 이야기로 발전되었다. 내용은 신이 인간세상을 통치한다는 이른바 신정론(神政論, theodicy)의 시각으로 하늘에서 내려온 제왕을 마법의 문구가 지켜준다는 내용을 하고 있다. 또한 주제별로 메소포타미아 신화에 나오는 인간 몰살에 관한 이야기나 구약의 홍수 이야기와 비슷한 내용을 하고 있다.

문서의 내용은 천상의 암소 그림에 의해 둘로 나누어진다. 그러나 학자들은 분석 결과 전체 내용이 4등분으로 나누어져 있다 보고 있다. 첫 번째 구분에서는 인간들이 태양신 라에 등을 돌리고 폭동을 일으킬 음모를 꾸미는 '인간 몰살'에 관한 서술이다, 라가 나이가 들고 쇠약해짐에 따라, 사람들은 태양신에게 등을 돌리고 대항하기 시작한다. 라는 인간들이 자신에게 등을 돌리고 폭동을 일으키려는 음모를 꾸미는 것은 알아차린다. 그러자 라는 그들을 벌하려고 자신의 딸인 하토르 여신을 보낸다. 여신은 피에 굶주린 암사자 머리를 한 세크멧트로 변하여 많은 사람들을 죽여 없애버린다. 그러나 라는 그녀가 모든 인간들을 없애버리길 바라지는 않아 세크멧트를 달래려 맥주에 붉은 황토를 타서 마치 피와 같이 만들어 들판에 뿌린다. 여신은 맥주를 마시고 취하여 온 들판이 피에 물든 것으로 착각을 하고 그녀의 광폭한 행동을 멈춘다. 나머지 부분은 라가 하늘로 물러나는 내용으로, 라는 땅을 다스리는 데 이제 지쳤다 하여 하늘로 물러나 자신의 하늘과 지하세계, 두앗트(Duat)를 오가는 죽음과 부활의 여행을 계속한다. 살아남은 사람들은 당황하여 어찌할 줄 몰라 했다. 그리고는 라를 음모하여 이 사단을 일으킨 자들을 공격하였다. 이로부터 인류의 전쟁과 죽음, 그리고 다른 사람들의 파괴적 행동으로 부터 마트 여신의 보호를 받으려는 사람들의 끊임없는 발버둥이 시작되었다. 

1876년 스위스 출신의 이집트 학자 에두아르 나빌(Edouard Naville)이 세티 1세 무덤 본의 영어와 프랑스어 판을 발간하였다. 이어 1885년에는 람세스 3세 무덤 버전을 발간하였으며 독일의 하인리히 브룩쉬(Heinrich Brugsch)는 1881년 최초의 독일어 본을 발간했다.

서문(序文)

Then it came to pass, that the Majesty of Ra,

who came into being by himself,

having been king of mankind and gods,

(still) together as a unity,

(that) mankind plotted against the person of Re while

his Majesty, life, prosperity, health,

had grown old,

his bones being silver, his flesh gold, his hair of genuine lapis lazuli.

 

거기서 나와 스스로 만들어진 태양신 라는

신들과 인간 세상의 왕이 되었다.

(아직) 하나처럼 같이 되지 못했다.

(그래서) 인간들은 그가 다스리는 동안

라 전하, 생, 번영, 건강에 대항하여 음모를 꾸몄다.

(라는) 나이 들었다.

라의 뼈는 은으로 되어 있고, 살은 금으로 되어 있으며,

그의 머리카락은 라피스 라줄리(lapis lazuli, 청금석/靑金石).

 

1편 : 인간 몰살(The Destruction of Mankind)

 

신들의 회의

 

Now his Majesty had learned about the plot divised against him by mankind.

Then his Majesty, life, prosperity, health, said to those who were in his retinue :

 

이제 왕께서 인간들이 전하에 대항하여 갈라놓으려는 음모를 꾸민다는 것을 아셨다.

그리하여 전하, 생, 번영, 건강께서는 신하들에게 말하였다.

 

Summon to me my eye, Shu, Tefnut, Geb, and Nut

as well as the fathers and mothers who were with me

when I was in Nu, and also the god Nu,

bringing his courtiers along with him.

(But) bring them secretly,

lest mankind see and their hearts flee.

Come with them to the Great Palace,

so that they may give their council.

(For) in the end, I may return to Nu,

to the place where I came into being !'

 

'불러라 나의 눈, 슈, 테프누트. 게브, 누트

명실공히 아버지와 어머니인 나에게로

내가 누에 있을 때, 그리고 누 신 또한,

그의 나라를 그에게로 데려갔다.

(그러나) 비밀리에 데려갔다.

나머지 인간들은 보았고 그리고 그들의 심장이 달아났다

그들과 함께 위대한 궁전으로 오게 하여

그들에게 회의를 할 수 있게 하거라.

마지막에, 나는 누로 돌아가리라

내가 존재케 된 곳으로!'

<'불러라 나의 눈'에서 '라의 눈'은 라로 부터 독립적으로 떨어져 나와 여신의 형태가 된다. 눈의 여신은 라와 함께 분노하여 그로부터 달아나 이집트 밖의 거칠고 위험한 땅에서 돌아다닌다. '눈의 여신'은 아직 돌아오지 않고 있음을 알고 있다. '눈의 여신'이 빠져 나온 라는 에너지가 떨어져 기력이 쇠잔해진다. 거기다 늙어 인간들이 나라를 분리하려 획책하고 있다.>

 

So these gods were brought, and these gods were lined up on his two sides, bowing their heads toward the ground before his Majesty, in order that he might speak his words in front of the father of the eldest (gods), the maker of mankind and king of commoners

 

하여 이들 신들은 불려졌다. 그리고 이들 신들은 그의 양 옆으로 늘어섰다. 그들은 폐하 앞의 땅을 향하여 머리 숙여 인사하였다. 가장 연장자 (신들의) 아버지, 인간의 창조자, 백성들의 왕 앞에서 자신들의 말들을 말하기 위하여.

 

They said to his Majesty : 'Speak to us, so that we may hear it !'

Then Re said to Nun : 'O eldest god in whom I came into being and You ancestral gods!,

Behold, mankind, who came into being from my Eye

is plotting against me

Tell me what You would do about this

since I am searching

I seek not to slay them before having heard

what You might have to say.'

 

그들은 폐하께 말하였다. :  '말하소서, 저희가 듣겠나이다!'

그러자 라는 누에게 말하였다. : '오, 내가 나와 존재케 한 가장 연장자 신이시여, 신들의 조상이시여!

보소서, 나의 눈에서 나와 존재케 된 인간들이

나에게 대항하여 음모를 꾸미고 있나니

이를 어찌할지 말해주소서

내가 (폐하를) 찾고 나서

폐하의 말을 듣기 전에는

나는 그들을 모조리 죽여 버리지 않으리라'

The Majesty Nu replied :

Oh, my son Ra!

Greater than his maker,

and more agust than his creaters,

be seated on your throne.

Great is fear of You when your Eye is

on those who conspire against You !'

 

누 전하께서 답하셨다. :

'오 나의 아들 라 !

피조물보다 위대한 신이여,

그리고 그의 창조물 보다 존귀한 자여,

그대의 권좌에 앉혀지리라.!

그대를 대항하여 계략을 꾸미는 자들에게

그대의 눈이 있을 때에

위대함이 그대의 걱정이리라!'

 

The Majesty of Ra said :

'See, they have fled into the desert,

their hearts being afraid that I speak to them.'

 

라 전하가 말하였다. ;

'보세요, 그들은 사막으로 달아나

그들의 심장은 내가 말하는 걸 두려워하고 있어요.'

 

They said to his Majesty :

'Send out your Eye that it may smite them for You,

those conspirers of evil !

No Eye is more fit to smite them for You.

May it come down as Hathor !'

 

그들은 왕에게 말하길,

'그들을 치도록 그대의 눈을 보내소서.

저 악마의 음모자들에게!

저들을 치기에 눈보다 더 좋은 건 없습니다.

하토르로 내려오게 하소서 1'

학살을 시작하는 신들(divine slaughter held off)

 

(And so) this goddess returned after slaying mankind in the desert, and the Majesty of this god said (to her) :

'Welcome in peace, Hathor,

Eye who did what I came for !'

 

(그리하여) 이 여신은 사막에서 인간들을 학살한 후 돌아왔다. 그러자 이 신의 왕은 말했다.

'어서 오너라. 하토르여,

하려한 것을 해낸 눈이여!'

 

Said the goddess :

'As You live for me,

I have overpowered mankind,

and it was balm to my heart.'

 

여신이 말했다 :

'저를 위해 사셨사옵니다.

저는 인간들을 제압하고

심장에 위안으로 삼았습니다.'

 

Then the Majesty of Ra said :

'I shall have power over them as king !

Hold off diminishing their number !'

 

그러자 레 전하가 말했다 :

'나는 그들에게 왕으로서의 위세를 떨치리라 !

그들의 수를 줄이는 것을 미루거라.'

 

And so the Powerful One (Sekhmet) came into being.

 

그리하여 강력한 자(세크멧)은 본래의 모습으로 돌아왔다.

 

술에 취한 신(divine drunkenness)

 

The beer-mash of the night for she who would wade in their blood as far as Henes.

그들을 피를 찾아 헤네스(헬라클레오폴리스)까지 헤집고 다닐 그녀를 위한 밤의 맥주를 만들기 위한 맥아즙(beer-mash)

 

Ra said :

'Summon to me speedy messengers

who run like a body's shadow.'

 

라가 말했다.

'빠른 전령을 불러라

그림자처럼 달리는.'

 

These messengers were brought immediately,

and the Majesty of this god said :

'Run up to Yebu

and fetch me red ocher in great quantity !'

 

이 전령들은 즉시 불려졌다.

그러자 이 신의 왕은 말하기를 :

'예부로 달려가

질 좋은 붉은 황토를 가져오너라!'

 

So this red ocher was brought to him, and the Majesty of this great god ordered the Side-Lock Wearer in On. to grind this red ocher, while maidservants crushed barley for beer. Then the red ocher was added to the beer-mash, and it looked like the blood of men ; seven thousand jars of beer were made. Then the Majesty of the King of Upper and Lower Egypt, Ra came together with the gods to see this beer.

 

그리하여 이 붉은 황토는 왕에게 바쳐졌다. 그러자 이 위대한 신들의 왕은 헬리오폴리스의 라의 대사제(Side-Lock Wearer in On)에게 이 붉은 황토를 갈도록 명하였다. 그러는 동안 시녀는 맥주 만드는 보라를 으깨었다. 그다음엔 붉은 황토를 맥아즙에 넣었다, 그러자 마치 사람의 피같이 보였다. 칠천 병의 맥주가 만들어 졌다. 그러자 상부, 하부 이집트의 왕 라는 신들과 함께 이 맥주를 구경하러 갔다.

 

And when the Earth was light for the killing of mankind by this goddess in her time of traveling South,

 

그녀의 남쪽여행 시간에 이 여신에 의한 인간 살육에 적합하게 땅이 환할 때

 

the Majesty of Ra said :

'It is good ! I shall save mankind from her (by it).'

 

라 전하가 말했다 :

'좋구나! 내가 그녀에게서 인간들을 구해내리라(이것으로).'

 

Ra said :

'Carry it to the place where she plans to slay mankind.'

 

라가 말했다 :

'그녀가 인간들을 살육하려는 곳으로 이것을 날라라.'

 

Ra, the Majesty of the King of Upper and Lower Egypt, got up early when it was still night in order to have this sleeping draught poured out. Then the fields were flooded three palms high with the liquid by the might of the Majesty of this god. When the goddess set out in the morning, she found these (fields) inundated, and her face was delighted by it. She drank and it pleased her heart. She returned drunk and failed to recognize mankind.

 

상부, 하부 이집트의 왕 전하, 라는 한 밤중에 일찍 일어나 아직 잠들어 있는 딸이 깨기 전에 뿌렸다. 이 신의 왕의 힘에 의해 들판은 액체로 세 뺨 높이로 흥건해졌다. 여신이 아침에 일어났을 때, 들판은 잠겨 있었다. 그러자 그녀의 얼굴은 이로 인해 기쁨으로 가득 찼다. 그녀는 마시고 심장은 즐거움으로 가득 찼다. 그녀는 사람들을 잊어버린 체 술에 취해 돌아왔다. 

 

The Majesty of Ra said to this goddess :

'Welcome in peace!

O Beautiful One!'

Thus beautiful women came to be in Imu.

 

라 폐하께서 이 여신에게 말하였다. :

'평화 속에 환영하노라!

오 아름다운 이!'

이 아름다운 여인은 이무에 나타나게 될지라.'

The Majesty of Ra said to this goddess :

'Let sleeping draughts be prepared for her

on the seasonal feasts of the year,

and let this be entrusted to maidservants.'

 

라 폐하께서 이 여신에게 말하였다. :

'잠자는 딸을 위한

계절 축제가 마련되게 하리니.

이는 시녀들에게 맡겨지리라.'

 

And since this first day, the (custom) came into being that people entrust the preparation of sleeping drinks to maidservants on the Feast of Hathor.

 

이 첫째 날 이후, 하토르 축제에서 사람들은 술 취해 잠든 이들을 하녀에게 맡기는 관습이 생겨났다.  

 

The Majesty of Ra said to this goddess :

'Is there a burning pain of sickness?'

 

라 폐하께서 이 여신에게 말하였다. :

'병으로 인해 타오를 듯 아프냐?'

 

And so respect is bound to come into being through pain. 

 

그러시고는 그러한 경의로 고통을 이겨내는 존재로 태어나게 하셨다.

 

2편 : 라의 퇴위(The Withdrawal of Ra)

 

The Majesty of Re said :

'As true as I live,

my heart is too weary to remain with them.

I wanted to slay them, but did not do it.

At present, their small number no longer interests me.'

 

왕이 말했다. :

'내가 너무 오래 살아.

나의 심장은 너무 지쳐있구나.

나는 인간들을 죽여 버리고 싶었지만,

그리하지 않았다.

이제는 그들 수가 너무 적어 더 이상 관심도 없다.' 

 

The gods in his retinue said :

'Do not withdraw in your weariness,

 for You have power over all what You desire.'

 

왕을 수행하는 신들이 말했다. :

'원하는 모든 걸 할 수 있는 힘이

있는데 지루하다 그만 두시면 안 됩니다.'

 

The Majesty of this god then said to the Majesty of Nu :

'My limbs are feeble as in the First Time.

I will not return until another (cycle) overtakes me.'

 

이 신들의 왕은 누 전하께 말했다 :

'나의 사지는 맨 처음과 같이 약해졌습니다. 

다음(주기) 까지 못 따라 잡을 것 같습니다.

 

Then the Majesty of Nu said :

'O (my) son Shu, (your) eye shall serve

(your) father as protection.

O (my) daughter Nut, place him {upon your back}.'

 

그러자 누 전하께서 말했다 :

'오(나의) 아들 슈, (너의) 눈으로

(네) 아버지를 보호하듯 돌봐드려라.

오(나의)딸 누트, 아버지를 네 등에 올려 놓거라.

 

Nut replied :

'But how, my father Nu?'

Nut said :

'Do not {be childish}, O Nu!'

(And so) Nut became (a cow).

Then the Majesty of Ra (placed) himself on her back!

 

누트가 대답했다

'누시여, 그러나 어떻게 아버지를(올려놓나요)?'

누트가 말하였다.

'(어린애 취급)하지 마세요, 오 누시여 !'

(그리하여) 누트는 변하였다(암소로)

그리고 라 전하는 그녀의 등에 스스로를 올려놓았다!

 

살육의 거절(the rejection of slaughter)

 

There upon these men(came back from their place of flight),

and they saw him on the back of the cow, and they spoke to him

'(---) we have(come) so that we might overthrow your enemies,

who complotted against those who created them.'

 

그리하여 이 사람들(싸움터에서 돌아온)은,

암소 위에 있는 왕을 보았다. 이들은 왕에게 말하였다.:

'(---) 우리는 전하의 적들을 타도하러 왔습니다.

저들을 창조해 내신 분들에 대해 공모한 적들을'

(But) his Majesty proceeded to (his) palace {on the back} of this cow.

He did {not} set off with them !

So the land lay in darkness.

And when it dawned in the early morning,

these men came out carrying bows and (clubs),

and they (found) a way of shooting at the enemies.

 

(그러나) 왕께서는 이 암소의 (등에) 계속해서 자리하고 계셨다.

왕은 그들이 일을 착수하지 (못하게 하셨다).

하여 나라는 어둠 속에 누워 있었다.

그리고 이른 아침이 밝아오자

이 인간들은 활과 곤봉을 가지고 나타났다.

그리고 이들은 적들에게 활을 쏠 수 있는 길을 찾았다.

(But) the Majesty of this god said :

'Your baseness be behind You, slaughterers !

May your slaughtering be far removed (from me).'

And so slaughter (originated) among mankind.

 

(그러나) 이 신들의 왕은 말했다 :

'그대들의 야비함은 숨겨두거라. 이 학살자들이여!

그대들의 학살을 (나로 부터) 저 멀리 치워 버리거라.'

이리하여 살육자들은 인간들 사이에서 (기원되었다)

 

라의 승천과 별 사이에 자리하심(Ra's ascension and palace among the stars)

 

This god then said to Nut :

'I placed myself on your back to be uplifted.'

 

이 신께서는 누트에게 말하셨다. :

'나를 네 등에 올려놓고 들어 올렸다.'

 

'What is this?', asked Nut.

And so (she) came to be there in both the heavens.

 

'이게 뭐지요?'하고 누트가 물었다.

그래서 (그녀는) 양쪽 하늘에 나타나게 되었다.

 

The Majesty of this god said :

'Stay far away from them!

Lift me up !

Look at me !'

 

이 신들의 왕은 말하셨다.:

'그들로 부터 멀리 떨어져 있어라!

나를 들어 올려라!

나를 바라보아라!'

 

And so she became the sky.

Then the Majesty of (this) god was visible within her.

 

그리하여 그녀는 하늘이 되었다.

그리고 (이) 신들의 왕은 그녀 안에서 보여지게 되었다

 

She said :

'If only You would provide me with a multitude !'

(And so the Milky Way) 

 

그녀가 말했다.:

'전하께서 한 무리를 주셨으면 좋을 텐데!'

(그래서 은하수가 생겨났다)

 

오시리스가 살고 있는 천국, '세켓트 하테페트(Sekhet Hetepet)' 즉, '봉헌(평화)의 밭', 토리노 파피루스, 프톨레마이오스 시대, 맨 아랫단에는 태양신의 2대의 태양선, '수백만 년의 배'라는 뜻의 맨제트(Mandjet) 또는 아침배 그리고 메세케테트(Mesektet), 저녁/밤배가 있다. 맨 윗 좌측에 오시리스와 태양신 라가 보이고 델타 삼각주의 바(영혼)가 새 모양을 하고 있다. 중간 단에는 사람들이 '봉헌의 밭'에서 농사를 짓고 오시리스에게 봉헌하고 있다. 

 

His Majesty, life, prosperity, health, said :

'Peaceful is the field here.'

And so the Field of Offerings(or Peace) came into being.

 

전하, 생명, 풍요, 건강께서 말하셨다.:

'평화는 이곳의 밭이다.

그리하여 봉헌(또는 평화의) 밭이 생겨났다.

<봉헌(평화)의 밭은 고대 이집트인들의 천국으로 '아루(Aaru)'즉, '갈대의 밭'이라 한다. 아루(iArw,Yaaru, Iaru, Aalu))는 갈대(reeds)라는 뜻으로 세켓트 아아루(Sekhet-Aaru) 또는 이집트인의 갈대밭이라 하기도 한다. 오시리스가 아누비스를 대신하여 지하세계를 관장하는 신이 되며 이 갈대밭도 지배한다. 또한 이 천국은 나일 삼각주의 카(Ka,영혼)로 여겨졌다. 죽은 자가 지하세계로 여행을 시작하며 저 유명한 최후의 심판인 '심장의 무게 달기' 의식을 끝내고 마트 여신의 깃털 보다 가벼운 자는 갈대밭으로 들어가는데 여기에는 15~21개에 이르는 문들이 있고 각 문들마다 괴물들이 칼을 들고 문을 지키고 있다. 갈대의 밭은 해가 떠오르는 동쪽에 자리한다. 심판을 무수히 마치고 지하세계의 여행을 무사히 마친 죽은 자들은 떠오르는 아침 해처럼 부활한다. 그리고 생전에 살던 나일 삼각주와 같이 생긴 담도 없는 이곳 갈대밭에서 생전과 같이 사냥을 하고 밭을 일구며 영원한 삶을 살게 된다.

엄밀히 말하면 아아루는 세켓트 아루(Sekhet-Aaru) 즉, 진격의 밭(Field of Rushes)'로 덮여있는 섬들로 상상되고 있는데, 이집트 말로 아아루(Aaru)는 '돌격하다. 진격하다(rushes)'라는 뜻이다. 이곳 갈대밭 중 오시리스가 거주하고 있는 곳을 '세켓트 하테페트(Sekhet Hetepet) 즉, '봉헌(평화)의 밭(field of offerings)'이라 부른다.>

 

이집트인의 천국 '세켓트 아루(Sekhet-Aaru)' 즉, '진격의 밭'

 

'Oh, I shall plant green herbs in it.'

And so the Field of Rushes came into being.

 

'오, 여기에 푸르른 허브를 키우리라'

그리하여 진격의 밭이 생겨났다.

 

'I shall provide them with everything.'

And so ever scintilating stars (came into being).

Then Nut started trembling owing to the height.

So the Majesty of Ra said :

'lf only I had the Heh gods supporting her !'

 

'모든 것을 주리라'

그러자 너무도 빛나는 별들이(생겨났다)

누트는 높이를 가지게 되자 떨기 시작했다

라 전하께서 말씀 하셨다. :

'헤흐 신들(영원의 신)이 도와주었으면 좋겠다!'

 

And so the Infinite Ones came into being.

The Majesty of Ra said :

 

그러자 무한함(지평선)이 생겨났다.

라 전하께서 말씀 하셨다. :

 

'O my son Shu,

place yourself under my daughter Nut

and guard for me

the two groups of Infinite Ones

who live in the twilight.

Place her over your head and nurture her.'

 

'오 나의 아들 슈야,

내 딸 누트 아래 있거라.

그리고 나를 지키거라.

여명 속 사는

2개의 무한함은

그대의 머리에

누트를 두고 잘 기르거라.'

 

And so it came to pass,

that a nurse is given to a son or a daughter,

and that a father places a son on top of his head.

 

그러자 유모가 아들 또는 딸에게 주어졌다.

그리고 아버지가 머리 위에 아들을 올려놓았다.

 

3편 : 천상의 소(The Heavenly Cow)

 

This spell is to be recited over the (picture of) a cow,

with  'the Infinite Ones who are' (inscribed) on her chest,

and over whose back is (inscribed) 'the Infinite Ones who are'.

Whose four hoofs are filled out in paint

and upon whose belly are nine stars,

issuing from its hindquarters in front of its hind legs,

while beneath its belly stands Shu,

painted in yellow ocher,

his arms support these stars,

and inscribed with his name between them,

which says 'Shu is himself'.

 

문구는 그녀의 가슴에 '(받쳐진)'무한한 자'인

소의 그림에서 암송되어 진다.

그리고 등은  '(바쳐진) '무한한 자'이다.

네 개의 발굽은  그림에 잘 채워졌다.

배는 뒷다리 앞에 있는 엉덩이에서 나온 아홉 개의 별이다.

배 밑에서 황색 오커로 그려진 슈가 쳐들고 있다.

그의 팔을 받치고 있는 이 별들과

'슈는 그 자신'이라 말하는 그들 사이에

그의 이름으로 바쳐진다.​

 

투트(Tut)의 무덤(룩소르)

 

A barque, on which are a steering-oar and a shrine with a Solar disk over it

and Re in it, is in front of Shu, close to his hand,

while another version (of a barque) is behind him, close to his (other) hand.

Her two udders are placed in the middle of her left leg,

one half of them being drawn in paint in the middle of this hind leg

with the following words outside in retrograde :

'I am who I am. I will not let them take action.'

What is (written) beneath the barque that is in front is :

'You shall not grow weary, my son.'

- in retrograde, and as follows :

'Your condition is like that of one who lives forever.'

and as follows : 'Your son is in me.

Life, prosperity and health be for your nose!'

 

노 젓는 태양선의 태양원반이 있는 사당 안에

라가 슈 앞에 있다. 그의 손 가까이에,

또 다른 태양선은 그의 뒤에 있다. 그의 다른 손 가까이에,

그녀의 두 개의 젖통은 왼쪽 다리 중간에 자리하고 있으며

'생기게 하는 이, 하늘을 받치는 그는 숭배 받을 지라.'

 

What is (written) behind Shu, close to his arm, is as follows : 'Guard them !'

What is behind him at his flank is (written) in retrograde as follows :

'It is right that they should enter when I retire each day.'

What is (written) under the arm of the figure below the left hind leg and behind it is as follows :

'Everything is sealed.'

What is (written) above his head, below the hindquarters of the cow

and what is between its hind legs is as follows :

'May he come out.'

 

슈 뒤 그의 팔 가까이에는 다음과 같이 쓰여 있다. :

'그들을 보호 하여라!'

그의 옆구리에는 다음과 같이 반대로 쓰여 있다. :

'그들은 내가 매일 물러서면 들어가는 것이 맞다'

팔 아래 왼쪽 뒷다리와 그 뒤에는 다음과 같이 쓰여 있다.

'모든 것은 봉인되었다'. 

머리 위, 소 엉덩이에 쓰여진 것, 

뒷다리 사이에 다음과 같이 있다.

'그가 나타나길'

What is (written) behind the two figures

that are between its hind legs and above their heads :

'The aged one is in the realm of the dead.

Praise is given to him when he enters.'

What is (written) over the heads of the two figures

that are between its forelegs :

'He who procreates, he who adores, support of the sky.'

 

뒷다리와 그들 머리 위에 있는 두 형상 뒤에 쓰여져 있다.

'나이든 자는 죽음의 왕국에 있다.

그가 들어설 때 찬미가 주어지리라'

앞발 사이에 있는 두 형상의 머리 위에 쓰여져 있다.

'생기게 하는 이, 하늘을 받치는 그는 숭배 받을 지라.'

 

 

4편 : 새로운 세상의 질서(New World Order)

 

토트

 

땅과 두앗트(the Earth and the Duat)

 

Then the Majesty of this god said to Thoth :

'Summon to me the Majesty of *Geb

saying : 'Come quickly at once !''

 

이 신들의 왕이 토트에게 말했다 :

'게브  전하를 불러라

말했다 : 즉시 오시게 하라 !'

 

제노비아(Zenobia) 무덤(Necropolis)

 

So the Majesty of Geb came.

The Majesty of this god said :

'Take heed of your snakes which are in You !

Behold, they feared me as long as I was there,

but You know their magical power.

Go then to the place where my father Nu is

and tell him to keep watch over terrestrial and aquatic snakes.

 

그래서 게브 왕이 왔다.

이 신들의 왕이 말했다 :

'그대 안에 있는 그대의 뱀을 주의하시길 !

그들은 내가 그곳에 있는 동안 나를 근심케 했어요.

그러나 그들의  마법의 힘을 아시잖아요.

내 아버지 누가 있는 곳으로 가셔서

육지에 사는 뱀이나 물에 사는 뱀들을

조심하라 전해주세요.'

 

You are to write down each mound belonging to the snakes there,

saying :  'Beware of spoiling anything !'

They should know that I am here,

for I am shining for them too.

Now as for their habitation

it will exist in this land forever.

 

그 곳에 뱀들이 있는 구릉에 써 넣으세요.

경고한다. : '망쳐진 것 주의!'

그들은 내가 여기 있다는 것을 알아야 한다.

그들에게도 빛을 주기 위해

그들이 사는 곳을 위해

이제 그리함으로써

이 땅은 영원히 존재케 되리라.

 

Also guard against the magical spells which their mouths know,

since (the god) Magic is himself therein,

as indeed (the god) Knowledge is with You.

It will not happen, that being as great as I am,

I shall have to keep guard over them as formely.

 

또한 그들이 알고 있는 마술 주문에 대적해 보호되리라

(신의) 마술은 그들 가운데 있으니

실로 (신의) 지식이 그대와 함게 하리다

나와 같이 위대한 존재를 생기게 하지 않으리라.

이전과 같이 그들을 보호하리라

 

I hand them over to your son Osiris,

who will keep watch over the youngest of them

and cause the hearts of the oldest of them

to forget their magical power.

They who are excellent in what pleases them

against the whole world,

using their magic which is in their bodies.'

the divine mind as vicar of Ra

 

나는 그대의 아들 오시리스에게 그들을 넘기리라

그들이 어릴 때부터 지켜본

그리고 그들의 오래된 심장 때문에

그들의 마법의 힘을 잊어버렸다.

The Majesty of this god said then :

'Summon then Thoth to me.'

So he was brought at once,

and the Majesty of this god said to Thoth :

'Behold, I am here in the sky in my abode.

Since I am going to give light and brilliance in the Duat

and on the Island of the Twin Bas,

be a scribe there and calm down those who are there,

those whom we created and those who (nevertheless) rebelled.'

 

이 신들의 왕이 말했다 :

'토트를 불러라'

그리하여 그가 즉시 불려졌다.

이 신들의 왕이 토트에게 말했다.

'보라, 나는 나의 머물 곳인 하늘에 있다.

하여 나는 두앗트에 빛을 주고 광명을 주리라

또한 쌍둥이 바스의 섬에도

기록하고  그곳에 있는 자들은 진정되리라

우리가 창조한 저들과 반란을 일으킨 저들'

 

It is You who shall repulse the followers

of *this (god) with unsatisfied heart.

You are to be in my place, my vicar,

so it will be said of You :

 

그대는 추종자들을 거절하리라

만족하지 않은 심장을 가진 이 (신)의

그대는 내가 있는 곳에 자리하게 되리라, 나의 대리자여

하여 그대에 의해 말해지게 되리라

<만족하지 않은 심장을 가진 이(신) - '혼돈의 신' 세트)

 

'Thoth, the vicar of Ra.' And I shall cause

You to send out those who are greater than You.'

And so the Ibis of Thoth came into being.

'And I shall cause You to stretch out your hand

in front of the primeval gods,

who are greater than You,

and my affairs will be good if You do that.'

And so the Ibis-bird of Thoth came into being.

 

'토트, 라의 대리자'  나는 이루어지게 하리라

그대보다 위대한 저들을 그대가 보내는 것을'

하여 토트의 따오기가 생겨났다.

'나는 태초의 신들 앞으로 그대의 손을

뻗게 하리라. 그대보다 위대한 이들.

그리고 그대가 한다면 나의 일들은 잘될 것이다'

그리하여 토트의 따오기-새가 생겨났다.

 

'And I shall cause You to encompass the two heavens

with your perfection and with your brightness.'

And so the Moon of Thoth came into being.

 

'그리고 나는 그대가 두개의 천국을 에워싸게 하리라.

그대의 완전함과 광휘로'

그리하여 토트의 달이 생겨났다.

 

'And I shall cause You to drive back the Hanebu.'

And so the Baboon of Thoth came into being and became vizier.

'As long as You are my vicar,

the eyes of all who look at

You are opened through You,

and everyone will praise god for You.'

 

'그리고 나는 그대가 하네부 뒤편으로 내몰게 하리라.'

그리하여 토트의 개코 원숭이가 생겨났다. 그리고는 대리인이 되었다.

'그대는 나의 대리인

모든 눈들이 바라보리라

그대를 통하여 그대는 열리라

모두가 그대를 위해 신을 찬양하리라'

5편 : 라와 누트의 마술(The Magic of Nut and Ra)

 

준비(the preperations)

(If) a man pronounces this spell over himself,

he should be anointed with olive oil and salve,

the censer in his hands with incense,

natron behind his ears and natron pellets in his mouth,

dressed in two fresh linen garments,

(put on) after he has bathed himself in flowing water,

shod with sandals of white leather.

 

(만일) 사람이 자기 자신에게 이 주문을 읊고자 한다면,

올리브기름과 연고를 발라야 한다.

손에 향이 든 흔들 향로를 들고

천연탄산 소다를 뒤 뒤에 바르고 입에는 천연탄산 소다 환약을 넣고

흐르는 물에 몸을 씻고 난 뒤

아마포 긴 옷을 입고

흰 가죽 샌들을 신는다.

머리에 깃털 장식을 하고 있는 진리와 정의의 여신 마트(Maat, Chonsua 사원, Karnak)

 

Maat should be painted on his tongue in the green colors of the scribe.

If Thoth intends to recite this for Ra,

he should purify himself with a ninefold purification,

three days long. Servants (of the god) and men should do the same.

The one who recites this, should carry out this image which is in this book.

Then he increases his lifetime doublefold (---) of excess.

 

마트는 그의 혀에 서기의 초록색으로 그림 그린다.

만일 토트가 라를 위해 이를 암송하려 한다면,

아홉 배의 정화로 정화해야 한다.

3일 동안, (주)의 종과 사람들은 똑같이 한다.

이를 암송하는 자, 이 책 안에 있는 이 그림을 완수해야 한다.

그러면 그는 그의 삶을 더 늘린다. 2배나 초과해서

 

His eyes will be his,

and all his limbs will be his.

His steps will not go astray, so that the people say of him :

'He is like Ra on the day of his birth !

'His things cannot be diminished, nor can his gateway crumble.

This is a successful method, (proven) a million times!'

그리고 그의 모든 팔다리는 그의 것이 된다.

그의 걸음은 잘못된 길을 가지 않는다.

사람들이 그의 말을 한다. :

'그는 그의 탄생의 날에 있는 라와 같다!'

처음의 시간에로의 귀환(return to the First Time)

Nu was embraced by the Eldest (god) 

himself, who said to the gods who came out (with him) in the East of the sky :

'Give praise to the Eldest god,

from whom I came into being!

It is I who made the sky and set {it}

in place in order to let the souls of the gods reside in it.

I am with them for the eternal recurrence (of time) born through the years.

My soul is magic. It is (even) greater than this.'

 

누는 가장 오래된(신으로) 받아들여졌다.

동쪽 하늘에서 그 자신, 으로 부터 나온(그와 함께) 신들에게 말한다.

'가장 오래된 신에게 찬양을.

내가 나와 존재케 된!

하늘과 세트를 만든 나

거기에 신들의 영혼들이 거주케 하기 위해

(시간의) 영원한 회귀를 위해 수 시간들을 지나도록

나는 그들과 함께 있었다.

나의 영혼은 마술

이것보다 (심지어) 위대하다.'

 

Khnum is the soul of Shu.

Kindness is the soul of eternal recurrence.

Night is the soul of darkness.

Ra is the soul of Nu.

The Ram of Mendes is the soul of Osiris.

Crocodiles are the souls of Sobek.

The soul of every god and every goddess is in the snakes.

The soul of Apophis is in the Eastern Mountain,

while the soul of Ra is in magic thoughout the whole world.

 

크눔은 수의 영혼

친절은 영원한 회귀의 영혼

밤은 어둠의 영혼

라는 누의 영혼

멘데스의 양은 오시리스의 영혼

악어들은 소벡의 영혼

모든 신들과 여신들의 영혼은 뱀 안에 있다. 

아포피스의 영혼은 동쪽 산에 있다.

반면 라의 영혼은 전 세상 도처에 있는 마술이다.

 

첫 번째 주문 : 라를 통한 보호(protection through Ra)

(What) a man should say in order to make his protection through magic :

'I am this pure magic which is in the mouth and in the body of Ra.

O gods, You who are far from me. I am Ra, the Luminous One !'

 

마법을 통해 자신의 보호를 만드려 하는 자는 이렇게 말해야 한다.

'나는 라의 입과 몸에 있는 순수한 마법이다.

오 신들이여, 그대는 나로부터 나아갔다. 나는 라, 찬란한 존재!'

 

두 번째 주문 : 라의 마법의 일치(identification with the magic of Ra)

(What) You should say when You pass by in the evening at twilight :

'Upon your face!

You enemy of Ra!

I am his soul, pure magic!'

 

황혼의 저녁을 지나려 할 때, 그대는 말해야 한다.

'내 얼굴에 있는!

그대는 라의 적

나는 그의 영혼, 순수한 마법!'

 

​(and say) :

'O Lord of Eternal Recurrence, who formed Everlastingness,

who diminished the years of the gods.

When Ra comes down, these come out of him every day.

Lord of his (own) godliness. Ruler who made his own maker.

Beloved one of the fathers of the gods.'

 

(그리고 말하라)

'오 영원한 회귀의 주님, 무한함을 만드신,

신들의 세월을 줄이신,

라가 나타날 때, 이들은 매일 나타난다.

순종의 주님, 스스로를 만드신 통치자

신들의 아버지로 숭배 받는 이.

 

세 번째 주문 : 누트 찬가(hymn to Nut)

하늘의 여신, 누트, 페두시리(Pedusiri) 미이라 관(회반죽, 나무, 다채색, 도금, BC 500년~25년, 밀워키 미술관)

 

A magician, his head being purified, should make a female figure,

standing to his South, and draw a goddess upon her,

and in the middle of her, a snake standing erect upon its tail,

with her hand upon its body and its tail upon the ground.

 

그의 머리를 정화한 마술사는 그의 남쪽에 세워진

여자의 형상을 만들어 그녀에게 여신을 그려야 한다

그녀의 중간에, 꼬리에 세워있는 뱀을

머리와 꼬리에 있는 손으로 땅에 세운다.

 

(He should say) :

'O You, to whom Thoth gives praise,

while the dignity of heaven is upon You

and toward whom Shu extends his arms,

may You save me from those two great and mighty gods

who dwell in the East of the sky,

who guard heaven,

who guard Earth,

and who are with enduring mysteries.'

천상의 존엄이 그대에게 있고

슈가 그의 팔을 뻗어 향하는 이.

Then they must say :

'How great he is when he goes forth to see Nun !'

 

그러면 그들은 말한다 :

'그가 누를 만나러 나갈 때 얼마나 위대한가!'

 

네 번째 주문 : 라 의식(ritual of Ra)

 

산 자를 위한

Words recited by a priest on the first and the fifteenth of the month,

in accord with this ancient format.

The one who recites this spell shall live in the necropolis,

and respect for him shall be greater than (for) those who are upon Earth.

 

사제에 의해 매달 1일과 15일에 말들은 암송되어야 한다.

이 고대 형식과 일치하여

암송하는 자는 네크로폴리스에 살아야 한다.

땅에 있는 이들보다 그에 대한 존경은 위대해야 한다.

 

If they ask :

'What are your names?'

(answer) :

'Eternal Recurrence and Everlastingness !'.

Then they are bound to say :

'(Truly) a god !', and to say :

'He has reached us here by this way.'

 

만일 그들이 묻는다면 :

'그대의 이름이 무엇인가''

(대답하라)

'영원한 회귀 그리고 무한함 !'

그러면 그들은 말한다. :

'(진정한) 신이다 !' 그리고 말한다.

'그는 이 길로 우리에게 다다랐도다.'

 

죽은 자를 위한

헤르세프(Hersef) : 양의 머리를 하고 있는 헤라클레오폴리스의 신, 라와 오시리스의 영혼의 결합체

 

'I know the name of that god whose face is that of Hersef !

I am he to whom an amulet is attached in the evening.

I am Ra amid his Ennead, his court made of magic.

I pass by uninjured.

I belong to the flame, which is the soul of fire.

I have no adversaries among men, gods, spirits, among the dead,

or in anything in the whole of this land.'

Words spoken by these gods who are gone alive.

The gods are to be informed,

they who have their faces in their hands,

(that) he is allowed to pass by on the road.

And so the Flaming One came into being in the sky.

 

헤르세프의 얼굴을 가진 신의 이름을 알고 있도다!

나는 저녁에 부적을 다는 그다

나는 그의 엔니아드(태초의 8인조 신) 가운데 있는 라이다.

마술로 만든 그의 궁전

나는 손상되지 않고 지난다.

나는 불의 영혼인 불꽃 속에 있다.

나는 사람들, 신들, 영혼들, 죽은 자들 가운데

또는 이 당 전체에 어느 것에서도 적이 없다.'

살아있는 이 신들에 의해 말해진 말들

그들은 그들의 손에 있는 얼굴을 가졌다 .

신들에게 그가 여행 중에 지나도록

허락되었다고 전해졌다.

 

책의 결론

 

As for any able scribe who knows the divine words and the spells that are in his mouth,

he can ascend and descend within the sky.

Those of the West cannot hold him back, nor can the saliva of his mouth become hot.

His head cannot be removed by decapitation,

nor does he (need to) bend his arms before the tribunal.

He shall enter at the head of the spirits together with

those who know the spells of the magical formulary.

 

신들의 말과 그의 입에 있는 주문을 알고 있는 서기에 관해 말하자면

그는 하늘을 오르락내리락할 수 있다.

서쪽의 그들은 그의 등과 뜨거워지는 그의 입 속의 침을 붙잡을 수 없다.

공판 전에는 그의 머리가 참수로 떨어지거나

그의 팔이 접게 할 수 없다.

마술 의식의 주문을 알고 있는 저들과 같이

그는 영혼의 머리에 들어간다.

 

No crime which he may have done upon Earth can be reckoned.

He can not be short of donations, nor can the net be prepared for him.

If You hand over (these spells) to any prince or to any magistrate,

(those) who take care for the one who has no bread,

(then) his headcloth need not be removed (before) the elders,

(but) they will regard him as leaves (------)

One shall not do anything harmful to him or (------)

 

땅 위에서의 어떠한 죄악도 헤아려지지 않는다.

그는 기부가 부족하거나 그에 대한 음모가 준비되게 할 수 없다.

만일 그대가 (이 주문들을) 빵이 없는 이들을 돌보는

어떤 왕자나 어떤 관리에게 넘긴다면

(그러면) 그의 머리에 감는 수건은 연장자 앞에서 풀지 않아도 된다.

(그러나) 그들이 그를 잎으로 여길 것이다.(------)

그에게 해가 되는 어떤 것도 해서는 안 된다.(------)
